Academic celebration

At Linköping University the main academic tradition is the Academic Ceremony, which takes place once a year. On this occasion, doctors are conferred and professors are inaugurated.

Two Academic ceremonies will be held in 2022; 20-21 May and 11-12 November.

About the Academic ceremony 

Traditionally, the Academic ceremony is held once a year. The ceremony begins with the inauguration of new professors and the university awards prizes and medals of merit to people who have made great contributions to Linköping University. The ceremony continues with the conferment of doctoral degrees. New doctors and honorary doctors receive a doctor’s hat or a wreath, a diploma and sometimes a ring.

Academic ceremony, 12 November 2022

Welcome to the second of this year's two academic ceremonies! The ceremony starts with the inauguration of professors, and prizes, and continues with the conferement of doctors in the following order: Faculties of Arts and Sciences and Educational Sciences - Faculty of Science and Engineering - Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.

Everyone is welcome and the doors of the De Geer concert hall open at 3.30 pm (free placing), all seats must be taken by 4 pm.

Time: 4 pm - 6.30 pm

Academic celebration concert, 11 November - we belong to the world

This year’s Academic Celebration will be a double celebration since the Linköping University Women’s Choir celebrates 25 years. As a part of this, the choir invites you to a musical odyssey of the world together with Norrköping Symphony Orchestra.

Every third year the ceremony takes place in Norrköping.

Other academic traditions at Linköping University are graduation ceremonies, which confer Bachelor and Master's degrees, and the Farewell Ceremony for students on international Master's programmes.

Every spring term, the faculties award honorary doctorates at Linköping University. These are conferred at the Academic Ceremony. As part of the celebrations, the honorary doctors hold open lectures for the public.

Honorary doctors boost LiU’s research

Seven international researchers who have each contributed to research at Linköping University (LiU) are to become honorary doctors. The ceremony where they are to be promoted will take place on 21 May 2022, during the spring’s Academic Ceremony.

Research talks and Povel Ramel to open the Academic Ceremony

The spring Academic Ceremony 2022 will begin with seven honorary doctors holding talks about their research. On Friday 20 May, a gala concert will be held, and on Saturday 21 May, new professors and doctors will be honoured.

Academic Ceremony cancelled

No Academic Ceremony will be held in 2020. Given the current situation and the recommendations relating to large gatherings in the light of the corona pandemic, Linköping University has decided to cancel the event this year.
