FAQ for degree students regarding roll call

All programmes at LiU start with a mandatory roll call. Here are the most frequently asked questions about roll call.

FAQ - Roll call

Why has LiU decided not to allow late admission?

LiU has not taken a decision not to allow late admission. We have made it clear that it is compulsory to attend on roll call day, and that an individual student can apply for an exemption from this. An earlier formulation led to a universal exemption, and the uncertainty that arose affected individual students when they arrived late for their studies. What we have now done is to make it clear that the roll call day applies to all students. Exemptions are granted only at an individual level, and not universally.

In cases in which students have had an application for exemption denied this year, the reasons for this depend on the situation of the individual student. In most cases, it has been assessed that the late arrival will lead to seriously impaired possibilities for the student to succeed with his or her studies.

Why has LiU decided to apply different rules than other institutions of higher education in Sweden?

In order to start a Swedish education program, an accepted student must claim his or her place. At LiU, as at man other institutions of higher education, this takes place through attendance at the campus-based roll call, and teaching takes place on campus right from the start. In other words, LiU has not taken any deviant decision. It is possible that our assessments relating to individual exemptions differ from those of other higher education institutions.

Why has LiU decided not to extend the introductory period?

LiU uses a roll call as start of on-campus teaching. Exemptions may be granted following an individual assessment. The studies have been organised for on-campus teaching, together with other students. In some cases, such as teaching based on laboratory exercises, the necessary equipment is located on campus

My application for a residence permit has been successful, but I haven’t received my card yet. What should I do?

You should address questions about residence permits to the Swedish Migration Agency. You should address questions about visas to the embassy in the country from which you are applying. We regret that these matters take such a long time to process, and encourage each student to apply for an exemption or refund of tuition fees individually. Note that it is necessary to decline an offered place, and apply for refund, on or before the day of the roll call and in order to receive a refund of the complete tuition fees for the term. https://liu.se/en/article/refunds

I’m still waiting to hear whether my application for a residence permit has been successful. What should I do?

It is, unfortunately, unrealistic that you will be able to start your studies this year. Please apply again next year. We encourage you to decline the offered place, and apply for refund, on or before the day of the roll call, in which case the complete tuition fees for the term will be refunded. https://liu.se/en/article/refunds

Can I defer the start of my studies to next year?

LiU assesses applications for deferment individually. The LiU regulations state that not being granted a residence permit does not constitute grounds for applying for deferment. More information about applying for deferment is available here: https://liu.se/en/article/anstand-studiestart

Is it possible to apply for an exemption from the need to attend the roll call?

LiU has made it clear that attendance on roll call day is compulsory, and that an individual student may ask to be assessed for an exemption. Note, however, that it is necessary to decline an offered place, and apply for refund, on or before the day of the roll call in order to receive a refund of the complete tuition fees for the term. https://liu.se/en/article/refunds

I have had my application for an exemption from the need to attend the roll call denied. Can I appeal against this decision?

Unfortunately, no appeal against this decision is possible. Please apply again next year. Note that it is necessary to decline an offered place, and apply for refund, on or before the day of the roll call in order to receive a refund of the complete tuition fees for the term. https://liu.se/en/article/refund

Who can answer any questions I have about residence permits or visas?

You should address questions about residence permits to the Swedish Migration Agency. You should address questions about visas to the embassy in the country from which you are applying.

Why does LiU not take the roll call using remote methods?

These courses at LiU are taught using on-campus teaching. The studies have been organised for on-campus teaching, together with other students. In some cases, such as teaching based on laboratory exercises, the necessary equipment is located on campus.

The situation that has arisen will lead to considerable financial loss for me. What should I do?

We regret any financial consequences for anyone unable to begin their studies at LiU. Note that it is necessary to decline an offered place, and apply for refund, on or before the day of the roll call in order to receive a refund of the complete tuition fees for the term. Https://liu.se/en/article/refunds. Unfortunately, it is not possible for LiU to compensate for other costs.

Does this problem affect also exchange students, such as ERASMUS students?

Exchange students are not affected.
