Best practices in focus at conference on refugee reception

A conference in Norrköping on 25-27 January will set the spotlight on best practices and innovative solutions for how refugees are received in Europe.

Flyktingar genom taggtrådThe initiative comes from Lars Stjernkvist, chair of the municipal council in Norrköping and previously coordinator of Sweden’s work to receive refugees. Also involved as organisers are LiU and the Arena Idé thinktank, with support from the Church of Sweden.

“This conference will focus on the constructive work that has been done and is still going on, both in Sweden and in many other European countries. We want to emphasise this aspect of the debate in society, and collect experiences that have been gained in Europe during the special situation with refugees that has arisen during the past year or so. We will achieve this by bringing together those working in the field, researchers and representatives from the civil society,” says Erik Berggren at REMESO (the Institute for Research on Migration, Ethnicity and Society), LiU.

Examples of issues that will be discussed are the various ways in which accommodation for refugees can be provided, how different municipalities and countries attempt to find pathways for the newly arrived into the education system and the labour market, questions related to health, and collaboration with civil society.

Over a hundred participants from many parts of Europe will attend the conference, which will be held in English.
