Christmas without concerts? That’s simply not an option for LiU’s choirs. This year, seven ensembles will perform at not less than 18 concerts.
By that time, the students in the ensembles over in Linköping will be well underway with their campaigns to spread Christmas spirit.
Chorus Lin, the university’s mixed student choir, will give no less than five Advent concerts around Östergötland. First up is Törnevalla Church in Linghem on 30 November, then 1 December in Västra Husby Church and Heda Church in Ödeshög on 3 December. Chorus Lin concludes its season with a double concert on 4 December in the recently renovated Saint Lars Church in Linköping. Admission to all the Chorus Lin concerts is free of charge.
“We’re serving up some classic Christmas cosiness, with a mixed repertoire that’s sure to leave a golden glow, despite the cold and darkness outside,” says Chorus Lin.
LiHtösen, the university’s female choir, is doing two Christmas concerts in Linköping, ”full of wonderful harmonies”. See them at Nya Munkens aula in Johannelund on 3 December and at the Baptist Church on 4 December.
As is the tradition, the Linköping University Male Voice Choir will give its four Christmas concerts in Saint Lars Church in Linköping, starting the week after Chorus Lin.
“A ham sandwich without mustard. A Christmas dinner without a schnapps. Christmas without Christmas concerts. They’re all just as impossible,” says the choir on its website.
Watch and listen as they spread their Christmas cheer on 7 and 8 December, and at two concerts on the tenth.
“Of course there will be loads of atmosphere, with just the right amount of tradition and humour. And we’ve got a few new takes on Christmas music for male choirs. It’ll be interesting to see how the choir sounds in the church, as it’s just been completely renovated,” says Christina Hörnell, director musices at LiU and choir conductor.
New this year is that the Linköping University Male Voice Choir will resurrect an old tradition: at every concert, student pastor Staffan Heidegård will present some reflections.
And don’t miss their Christmas teaser on Youtube!
Linnea, the academic women’s choir, will give two Lucia concerts, with Lucia processions, on 13 December in the Baptist Church, Linköping.
At Campus Valla there will also be a Lucia procession – in a slightly different interpretation. At lunchtime, the Red Army Boys’ Choir will do their bit for a red Christmas. They start at Baljan and end at the Key Building.
And to provide some thoughtful refuge from the madness of the season, the Linköping University Chamber Choir will perform Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol on 20 and 21 December in the Crusell Hall at Linköping Konsert & Kongress.
Actor Christian Zell will read the story that Dickens wrote in 1843 to pay off a debt, in which the miserly, bitter Scrooge is visited by the ghosts of Christmas and learns about the true meaning of the holiday.
The story is framed by Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols, with the Linköping University Chamber Choir performing together with MSK (the Musical Society’s Chamber Choir), the Bel Canto Choir, the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra and soloist Jakob Högström.
