Surrounding factors that facilitate or impede individuals’ use of and benefit from aids

I am involved in a third-cycle project with the aim of studying 150 young adults and adults with disabilities and their experiences of using aids such as electrical wheelchairs, prosthetic arms or electronic planning aids.

Questions

i) what factors in the participants’ surroundings influence their use of aids;
ii) whether the effect of these factors is to facilitate or impede the use of aids;
iii) to what extent surrounding factors influence the possibilities of using the aid; and
iv) how the influence of surrounding factors coincides or differs depending in the type of aid for individuals using electrical wheelchairs, prosthetic arms or electronic planning aids.

The study is a collaboration with, Senior Lecturer Liselotte Hermansson, the School of Health Sciences Örebro University, Örebro County Council, Rehabilitation and aids; the Dalarna Centre for Clinical Research, Falun; and the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences, Uppsala University.

Funding is being provided through the Regional Research Council for the Uppsala and Örebro region.
