In order to reduce emissions and increase efficiency and power density of heavy-duty diesel engines it is necessary to increase the combustion pressure and the temperature. However, increased load and temperature also means increased risk for fatigue failures and therefore improved methods and tools for fatigue life assessments of engine components are important for the competitiveness of the Swedish automotive industry. This project investigates the thermomechanical fatigue behaviour of cast irons and the synergetic effects of superimposed high frequency mechanical loadings.
