Diseases caused by intestinal inflammation are characterised by inflammation in the cell and mucous membranes of the intestine. Stefan Koch, principal investigator at the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine, is investigating natural recovery mechanisms in the intestines.
In all inflammatory intestinal diseases, natural mechanisms help the bowel to recover from the damage that inflammation causes. Stefan Koch is hoping that knowledge about how these mechanisms work will contribute to a better quality of life for the patients and, in the long term, to better medication against inflammatory intestinal diseases.
