On 16 June, the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY) gathered at Konsert & Kongress for this year's ISY Day. The event provided colleagues across the department with an opportunity to meet, exchange experiences and reflect on the theme of intercultural communication.

The theme of this year's event was intercultural communication – a topic of growing importance in an increasingly international research and work environment. Through lectures, discussions and informal conversations, participants explored how cultural differences influence communication, collaboration and workplace dynamics.

Communication across cultural boundaries

Following a welcome address by Head of Department Jan-Åke Larsson, the programme began with a lecture by Rozalyn Simon. Her presentation highlighted how cultural backgrounds can shape expectations, communication styles and interactions in both professional and social settings.

The lecture was followed by a panel discussion in which participants shared their experiences of moving to Sweden and discussed both the opportunities and challenges of the Swedish workplace.

After a coffee break, Lars Liljegren delivered the lecture Intercultural Communication at the Swedish Workplace (or Why Everything Went to Pieces). Drawing on practical examples and personal experiences, he demonstrated how misunderstandings can arise when norms, expectations and communication styles differ, but also how increased awareness can contribute to stronger collaboration.

Discussions and community

The programme also included group discussions, giving participants the opportunity to share experiences and reflect on intercultural communication in their own work environments.

As in previous years, ISY Day provided a valuable opportunity for employees from different divisions to meet outside their daily work and reflect on issues that are important to both research and working life. The day concluded with mingling and a shared dinner.
