Agtech Sweden at Linköping University, together with a number of partners, has been awarded SEK 11 million in EU funding for the new project “Energy-Resilient and Energy-Efficient Rural Enterprises”. With co-financing included, the total project budget amounts to approximately SEK 28 million.

The project aims to strengthen the capacity of rural businesses to develop local energy systems for the production, storage and use of their own energy, including electricity, biogas, hydrogen and e-fuels.

The Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth is allocating SEK 11 million from the European Regional Development Fund. The remaining funding comes from several partner organisations (see fact box). The project will run from January 2027 until September 2029.

A major challenge

Small and medium-sized rural enterprises in Eastern Central Sweden face challenges related to both electricity supply and grid capacity. Electrification is increasing dependence on reliable electricity, while the energy system itself is becoming more variable and demands for crisis preparedness are growing.

“By providing direct support to at least 200 businesses through system mapping, action plans and investment assessments, we can lower the barriers to practical transition,” says Per Frankelius, Director of Agtech Sweden.

The Federation of Swedish Farmers (LRF) is one of the project partners and is contributing SEK 500,000. Kristian Petersson,

“Through the project, we will develop a scalable methodology and a digital simulation platform that will enable businesses to share surplus energy and align their energy consumption with grid capacity. This approach combines climate transition with enhanced civil preparedness,” says Kristian Petersson.

Agtech Sweden and several partner organisations, including participating regions and LRF, have previously secured funding for a similar project, Smart Renewable Energy Solutions for Rural Businesses, with a total budget of approximately SEK 10 million, including around SEK 4 million in EU funding.
