At the undergraduate level IKE is responsible for the speech and language pathology programme, the medical biology programme as well as the main part of the medical programme. The department annually graduates around 40 medical doctors.

IKE conducts leading-edge yet broad research across a wide range of modern biomedicine; from detailed molecular and cellular studies to genetics, clinical research and epidemiology.

In recent years research has expanded significantly and is still developing in a very positive manner. Some of our strongest research areas are within neurobiology, genetics, cancer and blood cell research as well as regenerative medicine and systems medicine

IKE currently hosts four strategic research areas within Systems Neurobiology, Molecular Medicine, Infection and Inflammation Research, and Cancer. These research areas obtain special support from Linköping University and Region Östergötland.
