WISE Near Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) is a national research infrastructure platform that enables investigating material surfaces under “near ambient” and even ambient operando conditions rather than the ultra-high vacuum conditions of traditional XPS.

The platform is a joint activity between Linköping University, Chalmers University of Technology, Stockholm University, and Uppsala University. WISE NAP-XPS is funded by the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability.

More on WISE NAP-XPS

The infrastructure platform supports research by enabling development of novel materials, sustainable manufacturing processes, and high-performance components.
The infrastructure consists of four nodes:
• Linköping node
• Chalmers node
• Stockholm node
• Uppsala node

Linköping specializes on radiation-sensitive soft materials and offers both XPS and UPS measurement modes. Chalmers focuses on electrochemical and catalytical processes. Stockholm specializes in synchrotron-based time-resolved ambient pressure photoelectron spectroscopy. Uppsala uniquely integrates three complementary techniques: ToF-SIMS, EP-HAXPES and XRD, with the existing Tandem accelerator infrastructure at the Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala University to provide high-resolution elemental mapping, chemical-state analysis and structural characterization in one coordinated platform.

NAP-XPS at LiU

About us

The surface physics lab is situated at Campus Norrköping and serve as a central hub for near ambient pressure photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-PES) at LiU, with a focus on soft materials and their optoelectronic, electrochemical and photochemical properties and use in organic electronic and bioelectronic devices. The NAP-PES infrastructure at LiU has both an x-ray and an VUV-light source, where the latter enables high-resolution characterization of valence occupied electronic structure, including doping-induced states, as well as work function. The NAP-PES is an open research infrastructure that offers unique experimental possibilities and users can also benefit from the large local research- and lab-environments dedicated to research on functional soft materials and their application.

Equipment

Within WISE NAP-XPS a NAP-PES equipment is funded and will be installed at LiU, and thus made accessible through the national research infrastructure platform. The NAP-PES consists of a Scienta Omicron HiPP Lab system equipped with a monochromatized Al Kα x-ray source, a VUV source with attenuator (limit radiation damage) and a glove-box for sample handling and loading under inert conditions. The system is equipped for dip-and-pull experiments and provides possibility for operando electrochemical, photochemical and optoelectronic experiments. Users of this equipment are required to acknowledge the WISE-funding.
