We are now looking to appoint a PhD in the field of Gender Studies. 

Your work assignments 
As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research project of which you are a part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time. 

This position is part of the "Operationalizing Ethics for AI: Implementation, translation and accountability challenges" which is funded by the research program The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program – Humanities and Society (WASP-HS – more information at https://wasp-hs.org/).

This project has a focus on ethical perspectives for AI applications, with a theoretical base in critical studies of AI, data, design, algorithms and data management. The successful candidate is expected to work with social science perspectives related to science and technology, design and data, both theoretically and methodologically. Of particular interest are those perspectives and methods related to explainability, which make it possible for humans to understand better that which has been created/carried out by AI. The work will be conducted in close collaboration with The Bodies Hub at Tema Genus.

Your workplace  
Tema Genus is a creative and dynamic unit with an international profile in interdisciplinary and thematic gender research and education.  Gender Studies at Tema Genus spans a wide range of fields, for instance: feminist, queer, trans, postcolonial, race, posthuman, environmental, dis/ability, body, science and cultural studies. Tema Genus also directs collaborative international research centers such as the excellence center GEXcel international Collegium and the postgraduate research training consortium InterGender, and hosts a pioneering PhD programme, and an international Master’s programme in Gender Studies - Intersectionality and Change (with single subject courses at MA- as well as BA-level). 

Qualifications 
You have graduated at Master´s level or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be on advanced level. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way. 

Special qualifications: 90 credits of your total credits should be in a subject of central importance to the research area, including qualifications in gender studies at a minimum of 45 credits or equivalent, that the applicant has acquired integrated into disciplinary studies, in single subject courses or in a gender studies program.  

Documented proof of scientific competence in one or several of the following areas is a requirement:

  • Computer science
  • Gender studies
  • Library and information studies/critical data studies
  • Science & Technology Studies
  • Sociology

Documented proof of scientific competence in one or several of the following areas is a merit:

  • Critical algorithm studies
  • Critical design studies
  • Digital humanities
  • Human-computer interaction
  • Feminist technoscience
  • Statistics
  • Qualitative methods

The position requires a high level of English language proficiency. The successful applicant is expected to acquire Swedish language proficiency within two years of employment.

About this job 
When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at www.liu.se. 

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances. 

Starting date 
September 1st 2023, or upon agreement.

Salary 
The salary of doctoral students is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression.
