We are looking for a PhD student in AI and machine learning.

Your work assignments

The primary focus of this PhD student position is research on Dynamic Multi-Drone Route Planning with Uncertainty and Constraints with Professor Fredrik Heintz and the Reasoning and Learning Lab within AIICS. The research is part of a Vinnova-funded project together with Ericsson and Saab including collaboration with Brazil.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

We are looking for enthusiastic people to join our interdisciplinary research group. You should enjoy working as part of a team and be willing to learn from your co-workers and to share your knowledge and experience with them in return.

Scientific curiosity and the ability to think independently are essential personal qualities in a candidate. You will be expected to engage with colleagues and cooperate in supporting the activities of the research group. You must also have excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Oral and written communication skills in Swedish is a merit.

You have graduated at Master’s level in computer science or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be advanced courses in computer science, mathematics, AI, machine learning or similar. The applicant is expected to have good knowledge of computer science, mathematics, algorithms, and programming. Knowledge and experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning is an advantage, but not required. Knowledge and experience in route planning, deep learning, reasoning with uncertainty, optimization, and reinforcement learning is considered an advantage. Undergraduate research experience is a merit, but not a requirement.

An interest to do part of the research in Brazil in collaboration with Ericsson Research is an advantage.

Your workplace

You will be employed in the Reasoning and Learning Lab (ReaL), Division of Artificial Intelligence and Integrated Computer Systems (AIICS) at the Department of Computer and Information Science (IDA) at Linköping University.

The Department of Computer and Information Science was founded in 1983 but its roots go back to the early 1970s. It is one of the largest computer science departments in northern Europe. Our research covers a broad spectrum of fields, from core to applied computer sciences. Its vast scope also benefits our undergraduate and graduate programmes, and we now teach courses in several engineering programmes at bachelor’s and master’s levels, as well as the programmes in statistics, cognitive science and innovative programming. Read more at here.

Linköping University is an AI research excellence center with strong and broad research and education in AI both from a technical and interdisciplinary perspective. Coordinator of one of the four EU-funded networks of AI research excellence centers (TAILOR). Host of the largest basic research program in Sweden Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) as well as the Wallenberg AI and Transformative Technologies Education Development Program (WASP-ED). Host of the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS) including an Nvidia SuperPOD (Berzelius).

The Division of Artificial Intelligence and Integrated Computer Systems is highly regarded internationally for its research in many areas of artificial intelligence with a history dating back to the 70s. The Reasoning and Learning Lab mainly conducts research in the areas of machine learning, machine reasoning and their intersection with applications in, for example, autonomous systems, multi agent systems, and industrial use cases.

The employment

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date by agreement.

The salary of PhD students is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression.
