Guest seminar: The Paradox of redistribution – using System Dynamics models for thought experiments in political economy

Seminar - Department of Management and Engineering
This research explores a feedback theory of redistribution in social policy. According to Walter Korpi & Joakim Palme’s classic ‘The Paradox of Redistribution and Strategies for Equality’ (1998), a country’s level of redistribution and inequality reflects the design of its social insurance institutions. What may seem as being counter to intuitive belief, countries with social insurance institutions that target the poor and low-income earners have higher levels of inequality than countries with social insurance institutions with lower levels of low-income-targeting. In this paper, this “paradox of redistribution” is translated to a System Dynamics isolation model. In the construction of the model, I exemplify how System Dynamics isolation models can be used as tools for thought experiments that assist in developing endogenous explanations of system behaviour related to social policy. David Collste is a Marie Curie PhD Fellow in Sustainability Science at Stockholm Resilience Centre and Development Economics at University of Clermont Auvergne, France. The seminar is open for everyone and we very much hope to see you at the event
