  • Strategic Human Resource Management, basic course with at least 22.5 HE credits approved, including the modules Work and Working Life 7.5 HE credits, Organisation and Management 7.5 HE credits and Human Resource Economy 7.5 HE credits (or the equivalent)

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to

  • demonstrate an understanding of current labour laws, with focus on protection of employment, worker participation in the working life and working environment
  • plan and analyse processes of change in organisations
  • demonstrate knowledge of different schools of thought within methodology and science theory by formulating a scholarly study with an emphasis on design, selection process and data collection techniques
  • produce and, orally and in writing, present a project work in the knowledge field of work and working life.

Course content

Labour Law, 7.5 HE credits

(Arbetsrätt)
This module covers current labour laws, with emphasis mainly on protection of employment, worker participation in the working life and working environment. The module also covers negotiation and general agreement, consequences of the development of the labour laws for organisation and staff policy and for the role of the employer and the employee in the industry and public sector. Current legal cases are studied.

Organizational Development and Change, 7.5 HE credits

(Organisationsutveckling och förändringsarbete)
This module covers advanced knowledge of organisational development and change management. The different phases of change are analysed from different theoretical perspectives. Methods and strategies for various types of change management are studied. Change management is analysed from an individual, group, organisation and community perspective. Strong emphasis is placed on planned change and its limitations and possibilities. Additional themes that are covered are power and learning processes in connection with change and organisational development. This course provides the possibility to apply acquired knowledge on actual cases.

Basic Research Methods, 7.5 HE credits

(Elementär sociologisk metod)
This module introduces the scholarly research process, with an emphasis on different methodological and science theory perspectives. The emphasis is on elementary design, selection processes and data collection techniques. The course includes parts where the student may practise using different scholarly methods.

Project Work, 7.5 HE credits

(Projektarbete)
In this module, the students should produce a written project work, in groups, that is related to the current debate in the knowledge field of work and working life.

Teaching and working methods

The teaching takes the form of lectures, degree projects, individual or in groups, compulsory presentations of the seminar assignments that are given and active participation in the seminars. The course also includes practical exercises in elementary scholarly method, both oral and written, and carrying out a project work. The students should also study independently.

Examination

The examination formats vary, depending on the contents and planning of the different modules. The course is examined continuously via written examination and/or a take-home examination. The assignments that are given are presented in groups, and the compulsory written assignments and the project work is presented orally and in written form at compulsory seminars, where public discussion on another project work is also included. Detailed information can be found in the study guide.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it. If the coordinator has instead recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

Other information

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
