Course content

The course aims at developing the student's ability to analyze and operate within the conditions and contexts for contemporary media and cultural production. The course combines theoretical and historical studies of the functions, forms and roles that permeate productions within the fields of media and culture with the creation of an independent project that includes a media or cultural production. The course content is generated through an interplay throughout the course between theoretically substantiated production work and the study of productions based on cultural, social and media theoretical aspects. The course is organized around a project that involves fact- or fiction-based content and IT-based technologies for audio, video and/or space.

Teaching and working methods

The course is laboratory and emphasises the interplay between form and content. The course offers a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, screenings, study visits and supervision. The student is expected to be well prepared for lectures, and have completed given assignments for seminars, workshops, study visits and supervision. In addition to scheduled time, the student is expected to work on self-study, individually or in groups.

Examination

The course is examined through written assignments and active participation in seminars and workshops. The main examination consists of a written and oral presentation of a public production. The examination should cover the process, theoretical and analytical writing as well as the production, including a critical reflection of the student’s work. If students work in pairs, the text should show that both students have participated in all parts of the work.

The final grade of the course is based on the written and oral presentation of the production as well as the production itself.

Detailed information about the examination can be found in the course’s study guide.

If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it.

If the coordinator has recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

An examiner may also decide that an adapted examination or alternative form of examination if the examiner assessed that special circumstances prevail, and the examiner assesses that it is possible while maintaining the objectives of the course.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
