  • relate knowledge of different memory systems to different aspects of communication and disability,
  • implement the knowledge and apply them on a clinical group, for example individuals with hearing impairment or language disorder.

Course content

The course gives an advanced study in the area of cognition, communication and disability, on the basis of current research. The course begins with an overview of different memory systems and how these relate to communication ability. Memory and language are studied around different themes, such as hearing, reading, writing and development. The course highlights typical and atypical neurological, cognitive and linguistic development. The basic concepts and theories that are highlighted during the course are applied on patient groups such as cerebral paresis, autism, CI, learning disability and language disorder. Clinical applications, such as testing and assessment from patient case are an important part of the course.

Teaching and working methods

The course contains lectures, clinical laboratory sessions, demonstrations, seminars and literature studies.

Examination

The course is examined through an individual assignment that focuses the course contents from a patient-centred interdisciplinary perspective, and is presented at a seminar.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it. If the coordinator has instead recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
