Prerequisites

20 ECTS in Biology includning a course in Botany or equivalent.

Intended learning outcomes

To provide an understanding of basic ecological concepts and theories. The course also aims at an insight and exercise in the scientific method of working: to plan, carry out, evaluate and account for investigations that illustrate some current problems in ecology.

Course content

The course provides knowledge about basic ecological concepts and theories. The relations of individual organisms to their environment. Evolutionary ecology. The structure and dynamics of populations and ecological communities. Conservation Biology. Turnover of energy and nutrients in ecosystems.

Teaching and working methods

Lectures, seminars and computer simulations of ecological models. A small scientific investigation (team-work) is also carried out during the course. Seminars, computer simulations and field and laboratory experiments/work in connection with the scientific investigation (team-work) are compulsory.

Regulations (apply to LiU in its entirety)

The university is a government agency whose operations are regulated by legislation and ordinances, which include the Higher Education Act and the Higher Education Ordinance. In addition to legislation and ordinances, operations are subject to several policy documents. The Linköping University rule book collects currently valid decisions of a regulatory nature taken by the university board, the vice-chancellor and faculty/department boards.

LiU’s rule book for education at first-cycle and second-cycle levels is available at http://styrdokument.liu.se/Regelsamling/Innehall/Utbildning_pa_grund-_och_avancerad_niva.
