The course aims at introducing students to basic bioinformatics topics. Methods for studying sequence data, microarray data and trait data will be discussed. Of particular focus will be evolutionary tree reconstruction methods. Computational methods concerning this are not specific to bioinformatics but are useful in other computer science disciplines, e.g. text analysis. The course will end with a primer into the advanced topic of network biology. A basic mathematical tool that will be used and introduced are Markov chains including Hidden Markov models.
