Entry requirements
and that the students have completed courses in statistics equivalent to 15 HE credits at first-cycle level.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- account for how public data is acquired from national and international databases via the Internet and how the data is then analysed with specific focus on demographic data and time series data.
- assess the quality of data and interpret the results of the analyses.
Course content
The course covers:
- Information retrieval on the Internet
- Quality assessment of acquired data
Demography:
- Models and methods for demographic data
- Fertility, Mortality, Migration
- Life tables
- Index theory: Fixed base index and chain index.
Time series analysis:
- Time series regression
- Decomposition
- Exponential smoothing, Holt Winters methodology
- ARIMA, SARIMA
- Forecasting
Teaching and working methods
Apart from independent studies, the teaching consists of lectures, teaching sessions, supervision, two projects that are compulsory, compulsory review of another student's project, seminars and computer exercises.
Examination
The course is examined with a written examination and through projects that are presented both orally and in written form and with public discussion.
