Good knowledge of German: German as a native tongue or good knowledge of German (academic studies in German at least 30 ECTS credits or the equivalent).Intended learning outcomes
After completion of the course, the student should be able to
- describe and discuss the similarities and differences in Swedish and German cultural life
- discuss and compare the different genres of German and Swedish literature
- discuss and compare Swedish and German views on welfare regard to social structure , political system and education system.
Course content
Lectures and seminars in German about Swedish society and culture, focusing on:
- cultural differences between Sweden and the German-speaking area
- social structures and the political system
- the welfare state
- history
- literature
- educational system
Teaching and working methods
Teaching is given in the form of lectures, seminars and group exercises. Attendance is compulsory. In addition to the teaching provided, it is necessary to carry out individual studies. Languages of instruction: German and Swedish. Detailed information about teaching is found in the study guide
Examination
Examination consists of continuous assessment throughout the course, as well as the following, at the end of the course:
- one essay in culture and society

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it. If the coordinator has instead recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
