Course content

This course focuses on contemporary theoretical perspectives on identity, adult learning and implications for fostering learning in practice. It deals with:

1. Identifying a critical instance in students’ workplace that is related to adult learning and global change.

2. Understanding the effect of workplace changes on professional identity and

3. Designing strategies to address the change instance by fostering learning in practice.

Teaching and working methods

The rationale for this working form in the course is that understanding is promoted through elaboration of experiences that are further subjected to theoretical analysis and discussed in interaction with peers in a global learning community. All learning materials and activities take place online. Participating fully in this unit involves completing the required readings, engaging in discussions and other group activities, as well as completing assignments on time.

Examination

The examination comprises of three parts. Firstly, an individual assignment identifying and describing a critical instance in students’ workplace that is related to adult learning and global change. This instance is analyzed and discussed in relation to concepts of professional identity in the workplace. Secondly, another individual assignment where students suggest potential solutions and ways forward regarding the instances presented in the first written assignment. Solutions should be well argued and clearly related to conceptual understandings of adult learning in practice. Thirdly, regular and active participation in online discussions throughout the course is mandatory.

Applies to all courses regardless of grading scale.

  • Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

If the course has a three-graded grading scale (U - VG), following applies:

  • Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

The following applies to courses that include a compulsory component:

  • If special circumstances prevail, and if it is possible with consideration of the nature of the compulsory component, the examiner may decide to replace the compulsory component with another equivalent component.

If the LiU coordinator for students with disabilities has granted a student the right to an adapted examination for a written examination in an examination hall, the student has the right to it. If the coordinator has instead recommended for the student an adapted examination or alternative form of examination, the examiner may grant this if the examiner assesses that it is possible, based on consideration of the course objectives.
