Checking pregnancy, counting foetuses and assessing foetal age in ewes by ultrasound offers several significant advantages that contribute to improved welfare and production. Counting foetuses requires a wide and deep view with the ultrasound and a lot of training of the person performing the examination. If only information on whether the ewe is pregnant or not is required, ultrasound with a smaller view can be used (e.g. ultrasound for pregnancy diagnostics in pigs) and less training is required for the operator.
Ovi-Scan is an example of ultrasound adapted to count the number of foetuses in ewes. The system is compatible with electronic ear tags for easy and quick recording of results.
Duo Scan: Go Plus is an example of ultrasound that could be used for pregnancy diagnosis in sheep but is less adapted to counting foetuses. The probe is wireless and the images can be viewed directly on a phone or tablet and also saved as an image or film.
Pregnancy scanners
Ulltrasound scanning of ewes improves animal welfare and production by providing important information on pregnancy, foetal counting and foetal age. Ovi-Scan is specially adapted for foetal counting and can record data with electronic ear tags, while Duo Scan: Go Plus is wireless and displays images directly on the mobile phone, but is less accurate for foetal counting.
