In 2024 LiU achieved its best placement ever – 31st place – in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings. This ranking lists the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger.

The most innovative city in Europe
Linköping is the first Swedish city to win one of the European Commission’s European Capital of Innovation Awards (2023). The award highlights European cities showcasing effective examples addressing social and sustainability changes through innovation and development. Three revolutionary innovations from LiU
The giant iPad
Together with the company Sectra, LiU created a visualization table with 3D viewing. The table ended up at the offical list of Sweden's 100 most important innovations of all time.
Biogas buses
The first ever biagas-driven buses were seen in the streets of Linköping in the early 1990’s. Biogas delivers cleaner air and water, sustainable energy and reduced climate impact.
The hearing aid
In 1995 LiU researches were able to present the world's first ever digital hearing aid. Two LiU students applied advanced mathematical methods to bring this invention to life.
Reason 3: Support startups and spin-offs
The university fosters a culture of curiosity and exploration, which drives innovation. We promote entrepreneurship by offering resources and support for students and faculty interested in starting their own companies or launching innovative projects. Our innovation advisors provide counselling in areas such as start-up and financing and are free of charge for students, researchers and staff at LiU.
