At present, there is an abundance of easily accessible maps online that illustrate historical events, political situations and world views. Maps are interpretations that exert a great influence on the viewer. The ability to analyze map-making in its historical, cultural, and political contexts is therefore an increasingly important skill. The course provides a theoretical introduction to maps and mapmaking. Students will then explore the role of symbols, legitimation, and interpretation in the analysis of maps. The course also includes practical sessions in which students can try out map-making for themselves.
