InGenious - Sustainable Cities and Communities – cross disciplinary project, 5 credits

Spring 2026, Half-time, Linköping

In this course, students will address challenges related to sustainable cities and communities by emphasizing ecological sustainability, localized economies, social justice, and well-being. Drawing on the principles of a degrowth economy, students will collaborate in interdisciplinary teams to carry out a forward-looking project focused on sustainable cities and communities.

Creativity and problem-solving skills are trained through entrepreneurial methods aimed at developing local joint sustainability concepts. Ethical considerations, both in understanding challenges and identifying opportunities, will also be central to discussions.

The project is framed as a challenge provided by an external partner. This interdisciplinary work typically offers a flexible framework, giving the group considerable freedom while also requiring sensitivity and initiative. The opportunities and challenges that arise from this process form a vital part of the course and are expected to enhance learning outcomes.

Communication, both verbal and written, within the group and with other stakeholders, is another key element. Some of the communication will take place through organized presentations, where so-called “pitches” are delivered to an audience of varying sizes.

The course employs a challenge-driven pedagogy, making reflection a vital part of the learning journey. Teaching is primarily conducted online, with one week of in-person mobility through a Blended Intensive Program, should this be approved via Erasmus.

It is recommended to take this course in conjunction with 799G61 InGenious - Responsible Innovation for a Sustainable World, 3 ECTS.
