Data shadows

Join Tema's DataLab 21 May kl. 12.15-13.00 for a bring-your-own-lunch screening of the art movie Data Shadows, exploring Sabina Leonelli's concept of 'data shadows' which refers to concerns when examining data that is missing, unavailable, or invisible. The notion of data shadows forces us to rethink what is typically recognized as knowledge or dismissed as non— what is invisible, tacit, ignored, denied, expected, forbidden, private, inaccessible, unknown, or unexplored. After the film, we will discuss how such data shadows can be applied to our own data contexts. All are welcome!

The film casts a light on how research data make their way through human activities and non-human landscapes. By reimagining data as tangible physical objects (casts) that are subject to change from its very inception, we burst the bubble that has taught the general public, as well as academics, that data are immutable objects that magically appear everywhere all at once and can be easily controlled and owned. Our data have a life of their own, viscerally related to changes in nature, societies and climate, constantly adapting to novel conditions. Find out more at opensciencestudies.eu/datashadowsfilm.
