Institutions as Objects of Design

Kipum Lee, PhD, Vice President of Enterprise Strategy at University Hospitals, Cleveland, Ohio

Institutions are environments and systems that people can shape and that also shape us. They are the stuff of public life and fall within the realm of objects that can be designed. However, they cannot be designed like many other conventional products, if by products we mean the realm of the artificial. They require a different approach.

Designing for Quality Emergence - a Welfare Perspective

Jonas Boström, PhD in Quality Management, Mid Sweden University

Designing for Quality Emergence is how we consciously and intentionally design a dynamic process where organisations incorporate, adapt and facilitate different perspectives, in a given moment, which reveal new patterns guiding organisations to understand how their services meet or exceed people's expectations. This presentation explores the importance of activating the organisational sensors, using strategic listening, systematic reflection and "Follow-up".

Relationship as Infrastructure: Designing Healthcare Systems That Heal Through Human Connection

Allison Matthews, M.Arch Design Lead, Mayo Clinic

In complex healthcare environments, the most critical needs often remain fundamentally human. This presentation explores how Mayo Clinic transformed a request for "just an app" into a comprehensive relationship infrastructure for CAR-T cell therapy patients. Through low-fidelity prototyping and human-centered design, we discovered that physical artifacts could facilitate provider-to-provider communication and reduce patient burden in ways digital solutions couldn't, creating healthcare experiences that feel intentionally designed and deeply supportive.

Anticipation Meets Politics: Designing Evidence-Informed Governance

Gaia Taffoni, Research Fellow at the School of Transnational Governance-European University Institute, Florence

This project examines how anticipatory approaches and evidence-informed tools are integrated into EU policymaking, and how their design and implementation influence governance outcomes. Through comparative case studies and experimental engagements with policymakers, it explores the political, institutional, and cognitive conditions under which co-produced knowledge can meaningfully support adaptive and forward-looking decision-making.
