Discover cultural and global perspectives on Sports with the course Sport and Globalisation 7.5hp.

Sport is more than just a game; it is a powerful social force that shapes cultures, influences politics, and drives economies. Be it a full stadium and a world cup final, a parking lot game of basketball, the super bowl or a pub tournament of darts, sports may move and engage us almost like nothing else. Team colors can unite and divide whole countries, cities or even families. Sports generates and draws upon cultural meaning. As a cultural practice it is both a subject through which we can understand the world, but also a power that makes and shapes it.

Studying sport allows us to:

  • Understand Society: Gain insights into societal values and norms through the lens of sport.
  • Analyze Impact: Examine the profound effects of sport on social and political landscapes.
  • Explore Globalization: Investigate how sport connects and divides communities worldwide.

The course applies cultural perspectives on sport as global industries and a local practices. Drawing on contemporary theory and empirical examples it analyses the social, cultural and political impact of sport and how different actors try to exploit it for various purposes.
