The course focuses on how the European Union functions as a political system and deepens the understanding of its actors, institutions, ideas and processes. The role of the member states and the impact of the EU on the member states are discussed, as well as the importance of contradictions between political parties and entire policy areas. Based on different theoretical perspectives, the negotiations that take place within the EU are analyzed and what they mean for democracy and integration in Europe. The course provides you with tools to evaluate how well the EU functions as a democratic political system.
