Longevity symbolizes the success of modernity but is above all negotiated as a menace to societies. Population ageing poses one of the most important long-term individual, institutional and socio-political challenges of our time. It interacts with further processes of change at the macro, meso and micro levels and touches issues like e.g., social structures, productivity, migration, culture norms and values. We will therefore investigate the various sociological perspectives on the ageing society and will discuss the ageing society from the perspective of individual life as well as for social, cultural and political change in the 21st century. After an introduction to the basics of theory and demography of the ageing society, we will address key challenges, research perspectives and policy prospects in a national and international focus.
