Explore learning outside the classroom
How can nature and urban environments become classrooms? This course is based on current research on Environmental and Sustainability Education, and focuses on how learning environments outside the classroom can contribute new perspectives and opportunities.
Man and nature – a relationship in focus
A central part of the course is about man's relationship with nature. We explore different perspectives on place relations – how people understand and relate to their surroundings – and how this affects teaching in both outdoor and sustainability contexts.
Theory meets practice in outdoor education
You will immerse yourself in the theoretical foundation of outdoor education, while encountering contemporary research and inspiring practical examples. Here, we discuss and problematize how outdoor teaching can create meaningful learning about environment and sustainability.
Concepts shaping the future of teaching
You will work with key concepts in Environmental and Sustainability Education, such as planetary boundaries, conflicts of interest, and ecosystem services. Through the course, you will gain a deeper understanding of these complex issues – and how they can be translated into teaching.
Plan, implement and evaluate outdoor education
The course provides you with practical tools for teaching and designing educational activities in the natural and cultural landscape. You get to practice planning, implementing and evaluating outdoor education, using local landscapes as a base.
The course combines fieldwork with lectures and literature seminars. As a student, you get to work both individually and in groups, and challenge yourself in how you think about place, nature and learning.
