Swedish language courses

Why not take the opportunity to learn some Swedish while you are on exchange or studying a degree programme at Linköping University? It might be for social, cultural or career purposes, or just out of curiosity.

Linköping University (LiU) offers beginner’s courses in Swedish for international degree students and exchange students. The courses are part-time, with lectures once a week during the semester.

The Swedish language courses are offered at different levels, and admission depends on your previous knowledge of Swedish. Each course is worth 7.5 ECTS credits/semester.

Please note that these courses cannot be included in your final master’s degree from LiU. You can apply once you have been admitted to a degree programme at LiU.

The courses are free of charge for students who do not pay tuition fees. Fee-paying students are required to pay tuition fees according to the information below.

Available Swedish language courses

Beginner's course in Swedish, level A1, 7.5 ECTS

This course is intended for students with no previous knowledge of Swedish. The aim of the course is to give students a basic knowledge of Swedish with an emphasis on oral skills. The course includes pronunciation exercises, oral training, basic Swedish grammar and short, writing exercises.

Beginner's course in Swedish, level A2, 7.5 ECTS

This course is intended for students with knowledge of Swedish equivalent to the Beginner’s course in Swedish, level A1. Students will improve their Swedish language proficiency and broaden their knowledge of Swedish society. They will also acquire a deeper knowledge of important basic grammar and an elementary working vocabulary.

Beginner's course in Swedish, level B1:1, 7.5 ECTS, Open for all faculties

This course is intended for students with knowledge of Swedish equivalent to the Beginner’s Course in Swedish, level A1 or Beginner’s course in Swedish, level A2. Students will be able to discuss matters of everyday life in mainly correct Swedish and give an account of their knowledge of Swedish society and culture based on the course literature.

Beginner's course in Swedish, level B1:2, 7.5 ECTS, Open for all faculties

This course is intended for students with knowledge of Beginner’s course in Swedish, level B1:1. Students will be able to discuss matters of everyday life in mainly correct Swedish and give an account of their knowledge of Swedish society and culture based on the course literature.

Please use the application form to submit your interest. Late applications will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis if there are still seats available.

Application - Swedish language courses

Exchange students

If you are an international exchange student, you do not need to use the application form. Instead, you apply while selecting the other courses for your exchange at LiU in the mobility programme MoveON.

Tuition fees - only applicable to fee-paying students.

For each 7.5 credit course, the tuition fee is 13 500 SEK.

You must pay your tuition fee before the deadline. All necessary payment information will be included in your notification of selection results. This will be sent to you by e-mail. It is essential that you pay your tuition fees by the deadline. If you have not paid by the payment due date, you will lose your study offer.
