On September 29, 2025, the fourth workshop of the BioPart Project was held online via Zoom, bringing together approximately 20 participants from across the agricultural and energy sectors. Attendees represented a diverse range of stakeholders, including fertilizer manufacturing and agricultural sectors, academia and other key actors in the field.

This dynamic event focused on critical topics related to development of fertilizer market based on digestate-derived products in the Baltic Sea Region. Discussions centered on fertilizer value of digestate, its quality and ecological safety, technological issues of digestate processing and obtaining new value-added products, legislation and policy differences in the participation countries as well as at EU level, approaches for digestate certification and ways for digestate expanding for the fertilizer market. Speakers shared insights into current state of digestate valorization, challenges and barriers for digestate fertilizer market in Sweden, Poland and Ukraine.

Workshop Highlights

  • Policy and practice of digestate valorization in Sweden, Poland and Ukraine (Speaker Iryna Vaskina, Ass. Prof. from PULS)
  • Technological and operational aspects of digestates such as fertilizer (Speaker Iryna Ablieieva, Ass. Prof. from SUMDU)
  • Digestate granulation: experimental setup (Speaker Dmytro Hopkalo, PhD student from SUMDU)

The workshop concluded with a vibrant panel discussion on possible ways and mechanisms to expand digestate fertilizer market in the Baltic Sea Region. Experts from the biogas sector and fertilizer manufacturing, academia, innovation and communication explored key areas for joint efforts and knowledge exchange. We discussed strengths and weaknesses of digestate in comparison to mineral fertilizer, mechanisms of EU policy for stimulation of digestate fertilizer market development, and how to motivate farmers for digestate application due to possible challenges that can appear for local farmers. To sum up this discussion experts shared opinions regarding which steps should be taken at national and EU level to expand digestate fertilizer market.

The BioPart Project Team extends heartfelt thanks to all participants for their valuable contributions. This workshop marked an important step toward strengthening regional cooperation and advancing sustainable biogas solutions in the Baltic Sea Region.
