We are looking for a PhD student in Ethnic and Migration Studies with focus on International Law and the position of Afghan migrants in Central and West Asia.
Your work assignments
The applicant should be prepared to work in an academic setting which emphasizes the importance of integrated collegial collaboration of transdisciplinary orientation. Anyone employed as a graduate student must primarily engage in postgraduate studies, and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20 percent of full-time.
The doctoral student is expected to carry out doctoral studies on location at Linköping University’s Campus in Norrköping.
The candidate for this position is expected to pursue their PhD studies within REMESO’s thematic research area Globalisation and the Reconstruction of Normative and Legal Frameworks.
Your qualifications
The profile requires that the applicant has (1) graduated at Master’s level or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses, and at least 90 credits or a degree in Law or Legal Studies; (2) demonstrated skills in the critical analysis of society, jurisprudence, and international law; (3) excellent knowledge of Afghan, Central-Asian, and West-Asian society, history, and culture; (4) excellent language skills in Dari, Pashto, and Persian. Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement. That the position is announced within the framework of Linköping University’s Scholars at Risk (SAR) program will be taken into account in the selection process.

The Institute for Research on Migration, Ethnicity and Society (REMESO), founded in 2008, consists of some 15 active researchers and 5–10 doctoral students. Research is combined with teaching within IKOS and adjacent departments within Linköping university.
The Institute for Research on Migration, Ethnicity and Society (REMESO) carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate eduction within Ethnic and Migration Studies or International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER). REMESO is one of the university’s priority research areas. Since 2008 REMESO’s PhD education is integrated with an international Graduate School in Migration, Ethnicity and Society.
The REMESO Institute develops research on phenomena such as international migration, including forced and irregular migration, nationalism, citizenship, ethnic relations, and diversity, as well as on social, ethnic and economic inclusion, discrimination and racism. The institute examines these issues in relation to processes of globalization and European integration and to transformations of labour markets, nation states and welfare society. REMESO’s research profile also covers projects in which migration and ethnicity are related to gender dimensions, colonial and postcolonial histories, social movements, urban segregation, education, health and medicine.
The employment

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

1 September 2024, or by agreement.
