Exchange students are selected by their home universities. For information about exchange programmes, agreements, admissions, and applications, please contact the international coordinator at your home university.
If you are selected for an exchange programme, make sure you have sufficient knowledge of oral and written English to take part in the courses, which are taught in English. Your home university’s application form or web page will provide information about the documentation needed.

Exchange students do not pay tuition fees to Linköping University (LiU).

When applying to study at LiU, you can also apply for accommodation and a beginner’s course in Swedish.

Students from outside of the European Union must take courses of at least 30 ECTS per semester, which corresponds to full‑time study. Studying 30 ECTS per semester is one of the requirements for being granted a residence permit by the Swedish Migration Agency.

Courses are intended for exchange students who have completed at least one year of study at their home university. If you are applying to the Faculty of Science and Engineering you must have completed two years of study at your home university.

Exchange students cannot normally combine courses to obtain a final degree at LiU.

Under each subject area courses are divided into Undergraduate and Advanced/master's level courses. To be eligible for courses at Advanced/Master's level, you usually need a bachelor's degree of 3 years and/or three years of studies within the subject area. There will also be specific requirements in the course information. Advanced/master’s level is marked “A1X” or ”A2X”. The undergraduate level is marked ”G1X” or ”G2X.

Swedish language courses for Exchange students 

Intensive beginner’s course in Swedish, level A1, 7.5 ects

Full time in August and January
This three-week intensive course is intended for exchange students who wish to gain an introduction to the Swedish language. The aim of the course is to give a short introduction to Swedish everyday life and the Swedish language, its grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.

Intensive beginner’s course in Swedish, intermediate level, 7.5 ects

Full time in August and January
This course is intended for exchange students with knowledge of Swedish equivalent to the Intensive Beginner’s Course in Swedish or Beginner’s course in Swedish, level A1. Students will improve their Swedish language proficiency and broaden their knowledge of Swedish society. They will also acquire a deeper knowledge of important basic grammar as well as an elementary working vocabulary.

Beginner’s course in Swedish, level A1, 7.5 ects

Part time course, once a week during the semester
This course is intended for exchange students with no previous knowledge of Swedish and has the same content as the A1-course above. The aim of the course is to give students a basic knowledge of Swedish with an emphasis on oral skills. The course includes pronunciation exercises, oral training, basic Swedish grammar and short, writing exercises.

Beginner’s course in Swedish, level A2, 7.5 ects

Part time course, once a week during the semester
This course is intended for exchange students with knowledge of Swedish equivalent to the Intensive Beginner’s Course in Swedish or Beginner’s course in Swedish, level A1. Students will improve their Swedish language proficiency and broaden their knowledge of Swedish society. They will also acquire a deeper knowledge of important basic grammar as well as an elementary working vocabulary.
