Library publishing agreements

The national guidelines for open science have as a goal that research that is partially or completely publicly funded shall be published with immediate open access. As part of the promotion of open science, the University Library has signed a number of agreements with scholarly publishers.

This page provides information for LiU-affiliated researchers about how to make use of available agreements to publish their research openly available and without being charged any publishing fee.

1) Is the journal covered by a publishing agreement?

Use the search box to search for journals covered by a publishing agreement. You can search variables such as name of publisher, journal title or ISSN. See details regarding specific publishers further down on this page.

Which journals that are covered by a publishing agreement may change over time. Please check the specific details before you submit your article manuscript.

There is a list of pure Open Access journals at DOAJ (doaj.org). Some of these journals are what are called Diamond OA journals which do not charge a publishing fee. They are usually funded by academic institutions or learned societies.

Before you submit your article manuscript, it is important to evaluate the journal you plan to publish in. Consult LiU Journal Checkup and the web page Publish strategically to help you make an evaluation.

2) Do I meet the requirements?

A basic requirement to publish under an agreement is that you are formally affiliated with Linköping University. As a researcher, you are formally affiliated with LiU if you are employed, are a doctoral student or a professor emeritus at LiU. 

You also meet the requirements if you are affiliated with Linköping University in accordance with ”Riktlinjer för affiliering till Linköpings universitet” (Guidelines for affiliation to Linköping University). 

In the article as well as in the publisher’s manuscript submission system, you must state your Linköping University affiliation. If you have multiple affiliations, state LiU as your first affiliation. 

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences has listed a number of examples of how a correct affiliation can look like:

Corresponding author

Beyond a formal affiliation with Linköping University, you must also be the corresponding author.

 

In this context, you are regarded as corresponding author if you:

  1. Are the author who is submitting the article manuscript and handles the correspondence with the publisher ahead of publication and
  2. Are stated as the corresponding author in the article

As corresponding author, use your @liu.se e-mail address in the article and in the publisher’s manuscript submission system. 

 

If you don’t have a @liu.se email address, you are in some cases required to contact the publisher directly to confirm your LiU affiliation. However, this procedure is not accepted by all publishers.

3) What do I have to do?

Check if the journal is covered by an agreement and read the publisher info

Use this search service to search for journals covered by a publishing agreement. You can search variables such as name of publisher, journal title and ISSN. We recommend that you also read the publisher-specific information further down on this page.

Evaluate the journal

There are several aspects to take into account when selecting which journal to publish in, for example if it is a serious journal, its ranking, and if it is a pure Open Access journal or not.
Consult the online tool LiU Journal Check Up and the web page Publish strategically to help you make an evaluation. If you are affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, you can also use the following recommendations as a point of departure:

Select a Creative Commons (CC) licence

Articles published under the Library’s publishing agreements are published open access with a Creative Commons licence. Depending on the journal, you are offered to publish with one specific CC licence or choose between several. Your research funder may require you to publish under a certain licence, often CC-BY which is the most open licence and the one the Library recommends you to use.

Check for possible ancillary costs

Sometimes, a journal will charge additional fees that are not covered by the agreement. Examples of such charges are page charges, overlength charges, colour charges, submission charges and fast track charges. Usually, such charges are stated at the publisher’s website. You can also ask the publisher if there are any charges for a specific journal.

State information correctly in order to use a publishing agreement

If you are corresponding author and state your Linköping University affiliation and your @liu.se email address in the article and the manuscript submission system, the publisher will usually identify your article as eligible to be published under an agreement automatically. In some cases, you need to specify certain information. See the publisher-specific information below to check if that is the case.

By submitting the article manuscript while on campus or when connected via VPN, you can in some cases help the publisher to identify the manuscript as originating from LiU.

After publication

When the article has been published, check that it is published under the licence that was agreed upon.

Below is a list of publishing agreements according to publisher, membership and subscription with discounts offered to corresponding authors affiliated with Linköping University. These either cover the whole article processing charge (APC) or award you a discount.

The listed publishing agreements have either been signed by Linköping University Library or by the research funders the Swedish Research Council, Forte, Formas and Vinnova. Which is the case is stated under each agreement below.

American Chemical Society

British Medical Journals Publishing (BMJ)

  • The article processing charge is covered in full by the agreement. 
  • The agreement covers the publisher’s hybrid journals and fully open access journals (from the collections BMJ Premier Collection and BMJ Gold OA Journals).
  • Licence: CC-BY (CC-BY-NC for some journal)
  • Article types: Original research articles and reviews. Other terms may be used depending on the journal, please contact the Library for more information.

When submitting the article, and asked the question "Is the corresponding author affiliated with one of the following organizations," select the option "Swedish universities, university colleges, public agencies, and research institutes" in the dropdown menu. Then, select Linköping University.

For the article processing charge to be covered by the agreement, corresponding authors must notify the editor at submission that they are affiliated to an organization that participates in the Bibsam agreement. There are no additional charges for submission or supplementary material for the authors.

Nature journals

  • The article processing charge is covered in full by the agreement.
  • The agreement covers a selection of the publisher’s hybrid journals, called Nature research journals. Please note that not all journals on the platform nature.com are included in the agreement; Nature protocols and Nature Review journals are not included.   • Licence: CC-BY
