SCAPIS is a national population study where data has been collected at six sites in Sweden during 2013-2018. In addition to Linköping also Gothenburg, Malmö/Lund, Stockholm, Uppsala and Umeå have participated. At all sites the study has been a collaboration between the local university and university hospital. The main funding source has been the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation. In total, 30 000 individuals have been examined and of those a little over 5000 in Linköping.

Aim and Goal

The aim of SCAPIS is to predict and prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The goal is to further develop individualized treatment and improve health care by building a nationwide, open-access, population-based cohort.

Local Examinations in Linköping

In Linköping the SCAPIS examinations were initiated in October 2015 and concluded in June 2018 when the goal of 5000 participants was reached. Apart from the core examinations the participants in Linköping was also offered to participate in the following additional examinations:

  • Blood pressure measurement at home
  • Echocardiography
  • Tonometry pulse wave analysis and pulse wave velocity determination
  • Measurements of the circulation in the capillaries of peripheral skin
  • Extended MRI and ultrasound examination of the carotids
  • Determination of cortisol levels
  • Questionnaire about cognitive function
  • Questionnaire related to menopause for female participants
  • Analysis of expired breath to find markers for COPD and heart failure
