Linköping University PhD students in the humanities and social sciences can take part in an annual cross-disciplinary knowledge retreat offering intellectual exchanges and innovative workshops in a beautiful setting in Åtvidaberg.

Presenting, publishing and disseminating research is a skill that few researchers seem to have the time and opportunity to develop. At Viveka’s knowledge retreat, 10–20 PhD students are given the rare opportunity to dive deeply into research communication and learn how to navigate academia and shine in your field. The set-up and content aim to broaden perspectives and inspire PhD students to solve communicative tasks in new ways. The retreat is an opportunity to meet colleagues from different fields and in different phases of their research, in a cross-disciplinary spirit.

This is the most important thing that has happened to me during my doctoral studies

Workshops with experts in the field

The programme consists of lectures and workshops followed by group discussions. Exact topics will vary depending on the lecturers, but the overall theme is how to use creative and effective approaches to communicate research. The four days of the retreat provide ample opportunity for discussion and reflection, with time to develop practical skills as well as think about how your own research can reach out to a wider audience. The retreat is located in a secluded villa set in beautiful grounds in Åtvidaberg. Food, accommodation and travel are included.

Viveka Adelswärd – an important donor

The annual knowledge retreat is possible due to benefactor Viveka Adelswärd, professor emeritas at LiU. Viveka’s generosity allows us to recreate the cross-disciplinary environment she once experienced during her time at LiU.

Villa Baro, Viveka´s Knowledge Retreat

The retreat is planned and led by the PhD students themselves. A planning group of 2–4 PhD students is selected each year. They are responsible for organizing activities, planning the programme and inviting guest lecturers. The group has a leading and significant role, both before and after the event.

Would you like to plan upcoming retreats?
All PhD students can apply to be part of the planning group and will earn an estimated 80-120 hours of departmental service. Accepting this assignment is also a good opportunity for those who want to develop project management skills. If you are interested, please contact Kristina Lyngenberg, contact details below.
