My PhD thesis, A Battle Over Children: Nonformal Education in Norwegian Uniformed Children's Organisations, 1910-1960 investigated how Norwegian Christians, communists, social democrats and national socialists established uniformed children’s branches that drew on strikingly similar pedagogical repertoires to compete for the loyalties of children. I have also worked on child-produced source material to explore the political experiences of children in the interwar period, particularly on the radical left.
Since 2025 I have also worked on questions about war preparedness, civil defence cultures and education in Scandinavia. My postdoctoral research at Linköping University will focus on locating and analysing child-produced sources that address nuclear anxieties, defence questions and preparedness.
I also have an interest in history education and practical methods of history teaching, and have recently co-edited a book together with Norwegian colleagues about pedagogical perspectives and teaching strategies for the histories of national minorities in Norway.
