LiU Sustainability Transformations - LiUST

Linköping University Sustainability Transformations (LiUST) is a university-wide hub to elevate and increase the visibility of ongoing sustainability efforts at LiU, internally and externally. By providing a platform for research and collaboration, LiUST engages researchers, students and external partners in efforts towards sustainability transformations.

Faced with a changing climate, biodiversity loss and unequal opportunities, the conditions for our lives and the planet are fundamentally shifting. To meet these vital challenges, incremental, small adjustments to the ways we live our lives and organise our societies are no longer sufficient. Instead, we need profound, long-term societal transformations towards sustainable societies. The scale of the challenge ahead is immense, and while there are examples of successful transformations at a smaller scale, the world is embarking on unprecedented efforts towards sustainability on a global scale.

It is in this context that universities have a critical role in training a new generation in navigating transformations, developing groundbreaking innovations, and providing knowledge to inspire and guide people in their everyday life as well as decision-makers.

LiUST brings together researchers and students from across the university to address, in collaboration with external partners, key sustainability questions and challenges through workshops, seminars and pilot projects, nurturing a culture of collaboration and innovative approaches to sustainable transformations.

Our mission is to:

  • Catalyse existing work at LiU to further realize LiU's strategic goal of contributing to the societies’ sustainability transformations.
  • Facilitate novel ideas and innovation by means of transdisciplinary initiatives across faculties and departments.
  • Elevate and reach increased visibility inside and outside the university of ongoing sustainability initiatives at LiU.
  • Strengthen the ability of the university and collaborating partners to navigate rapid and profound societal change both on a local, national and international scale.
  • Contribute to transformative change for the 2030 Agenda and beyond.
  • Support research, capacity building, and collaboration both on and for societal transformations towards sustainable development.

Campus as an experimental arena – LiUST roundtable discussions

How can we use the university’s own environments to test and develop new solutions for sustainability transitions? This spring, LiUST is launching a series of roundtable discussions exploring how LiU’s campuses can serve as dynamic spaces for experimentation and innovation. The sessions will be held at Campus Norrköping and Campus Valla in February and March, followed by online events.

The aim of the discussions is to:

  • Bring together researchers interested in innovative sustainability research who can use the university’s campuses as experimental arenas.
  • Compile and explore what researchers are already doing and what they would like to do on campus.
  • Identify challenges, needs, and opportunities related to developing the campus as an experimental arena.
  • Find ways forward for potential collaborations and innovative ideas.

How can universities work with mobility, travel and global collaboration in a more sustainable way?

On 3 March, LiUST and the Centre for Climate Policy Research hosted an event focusing on the university’s steps towards more sustainable business travel. Short presentations were followed by a panel discussion on emissions linked to travel, low-carbon alternatives and experiences from a department that actively promotes train travel. Representatives from research, university management and administration discussed how universities can balance the need for internationalisation with the responsibility to reduce climate impact. The discussion was based on the recommendations of the Working Group on Sustainable Internationalisation and LiU’s Environmental goal 3 – to reduce emissions by 25 % compared to 2019. And the discussion continues.
– I hope that the discussion will lead to increased awareness of the importance of acting quickly and with significant impact at all levels at LiU.

Games for Sustainability Transitions

How can research contribute to sustainability transitions at a broad societal level? This question was explored at a workshop, where researchers worked in interdisciplinary groups based on planned or ongoing research projects to broaden their perspectives.

During the workshop, participants developed game prototypes exploring pathways towards futures that are both possible and worth living in. By translating research into game formats, key actors, relationships, incentives and structures shaping society and future development were made visible. The workshop was led by Ola Leifler, Senior Lecturer at IDA, and Ola Uhrqvist, Senior Lecturer at IBL, and was organised by the LiU Centre for Sustainability Transitions (LiUST).

“The aim is to place one’s research in a larger context that can be played with, in the serious sense of the word, in order to formulate better research questions and make the research as relevant as possible,” says Ola Leifler.

Environment and sustainability at LiU

The main role of the university's environmental and sustainability work is to provide research, educate in the field and, in cooperation with other societal actors, to help meet goals on national environmental quality and global sustainability.
