LiU's Profile Areas

Excellent research areas has been designated as LiU's profile areas

Focus on societal challenges, interdisciplinary research, and innovation

LiU has both breadth and depth in its research, but there are four areas that stand out a little extra, so much so that they have now been designated as profile areas.

The four areas designated as profile areas in research are Life Science Technologies, Materials Science for Sustainable Technologies, Societal Transformations, and Visual Digital Futures.

The decision on profile areas is based on the governments research policy bill that clarifies the investment in quality-based resource allocation by requiring higher education institutions to define profile areas that can be used as part of future resource allocation. The profile areas should be strategic research initiatives of high quality, initiated and driven by the institutions themselves.

The decision was preceded by an internal process in which researchers were able to freely nominate proposals, which were then evaluated according to the requirements that these are areas with a clear profile where LiU already has or may be taking a leading international position. In addition to having great future potential, they will also demonstrate LiU’s breadth in terms of interdisciplinary science, innovation and focus on societal challenges.
