Two years after the original grant, the procurement of the next generation advanced scanning transmission electron microscope, has finally concluded.

Ångströmhuset is a purpose-built environment, enabling continuous and noise free operation of one of the world’s sharpest (scanning) transmission electron microscopes.

Our research focuses on the application and development of advanced electron microscopy techniques to study the structure and chemistry of materials at the highest attainable spatial resolution.

For the first time, scientists have managed to create sheets of gold only a single atom layer thick. According to the researchers from LiU this has given the gold new properties that can make it suitable for use in various applications.

Using a “chemical scissor”, thin materials can be tailored even at atom level. This is shown in a study published in Science. The results pave the way for new materials for use in future sustainable energy production, energy storage and electronics.
