Mechanical Engineering is a discipline of engineering sciences based on classical mechanics. In a broader sense, it covers disciplines from product development and design engineering to construction materials and computational mechanics.

Three new professors of design and a newly developed international master’s programme will further reinforce LiU’s position within Swedish design.

Design optimisation and a systems-based approach can improve the communication equipment, sensors and other components of unmanned aerial vehicles of the future. One result is more effective searches for missing people using drones.

Create a team with nine students from LiU and Stanford, from different programmes of education and four different countries. Ask them to solve a task from Saab and give them nine months to do it. What’s the result? The DaMD course.

Using VR in lab work is popular with future engineers at LiU. They learn more rapidly and find everything easier to understand – and later find that industry is eager to employ people who have combined an engineering degree with visual programming.

Robot + human = true. After several years’ work, a LiU project shows how industrial robots and humans will be able to work together in the future.

In a few hours robots can be fitted with new fingers and reprogrammed for a new assembly task. For his doctoral project, Mohammadali Honarpardaz has developed a method to construct rapidly a new configuration of robot fingers designed for a new task.

The first year-group from the international master’s programme in design has graduated.“It suited me perfectly that the programme was new and a bit disorganised. I’ve benefited from everything in the master’s programme” Caspar Reuterswärd assures us.

Large industrial robots have thus far worked in isolation, in clearly defined areas without people nearby. A newly presented thesis at LiU, however, shows that such robots can very well work together with people – and how safety can be ensured.
