Your work assignments

The applicant should be prepared to work in an academic setting which emphasizes the importance of integrated collegial collaboration of transdisciplinary orientation. Anyone employed as a graduate student must primarily engage in postgraduate studies, and the research

projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20 percent of full-time. The doctoral student is expected to carry out doctoral studies on location at Linköping University’s Campus in Norrköping.

The Institute for Research on Migration, Ethnicity and Society (REMESO), is looking for 2 or more PhD candidates. The candidate will work on an independently outlined project that can be aligned to one or several of the five REMESO research streams: social transformation, migration and mobility; borders and boundaries; integration and segregation; discrimination and racism; migrant agency.

We will consider applicants working in one or several of the research streams. We are particularly interested in internationally oriented applications, including with a focus on cases in the global South. This could also include applicants interested in relations/tensions between the global North and global South. We will also consider applicants focused primarily on Swedish/Nordic cases or topics.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in the Social Sciences or Humanities or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses.

The profile requires that the applicant has (1) an advanced degree, or the equivalent thereof, in the humanities or the social sciences; (2) demonstrated skills in the critical analysis of society and culture; (3) an appreciation of contemporary theoretical approaches to REMESO research areas; (4) an appreciation of methodological debates in the social sciences and humanities.

The applicant should also show interest in socio-cultural and theoretical research on processes affecting ethnic relations, cultural identities, migration, racism and/or definitions of citizenship in a transnational context. Knowledge in English is a requirement.

Applications must include, in addition to a cover letter: a proposal for a PhD project in an area relevant to the above profile (maximum 3 pages or 3000 words); a declaration of interest stating why the applicant is interested in pursuing PhD studies at REMESO, including what they expect to contribute to REMESO’s environment for research and education (maximum 1,000 words); a writing sample (examined Master’s thesis, or published article).

Your workplace

The Institute for Research on Migration, Ethnicity and Society (REMESO), founded in 2008, consists of over twenty active researchers, ten doctoral students and twenty affiliated researchers. Research is combined with teaching within IKOS and adjacent departments within Linköping university. REMESO carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within Ethnic and Migration Studies and International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER). REMESO is one of the university’s priority research areas. Since 2008 REMESO’s PhD education is integrated with an international Graduate School in Migration, Ethnicity and Society.

The employment

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of normally four years’ full-time equivalent. Extension of employment up to five years is based on the degree of teaching and institutional assignment. Further extensions may be granted in exceptional circumstances. You will initially be employed for one year, after which your employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, depending on your progress through the study plan.

1 September 2026, or by agreement.

The salary of PhD students is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression.
