Information for research participants

We would like to ask you if you would like to participate in the research project Resilience among refugee children and young adults - a qualitative study with co-creation with the target group and stakeholder organisations.

This document provides you with information about the project and what it means to participate.

What type of project is it and why do we want you to participate?

The national knowledge centre concerning violence against children, Barnafrid at Linköping University is conducting a study that aims to increase understanding of resilience among refugee children and young adults. As part of the study, we wish to invite refugee children and young adults (15-25 years) and representatives of different organisations working with refugee children and young adults to participate in workshops where they will work together to develop an interview guide. This guide will be used in interviews where refugee children and young adults can talk about their experiences of resilience.

In the workshop, you will gain knowledge of scientific methods and develop questions linked to resilience in the context of refuge from other countries to Sweden. The entity responsible for research is Linköping University. The entity responsible for research means the organisation that is responsible for the project. The research has been approved by the Swedish Ethical Review Authority, registration number 2024-00397-01.

How does the project work?

You will be invited to a workshop that will last approximately 3-4 hours. The workshop will focus on resilience. Methods used in the workshop will be jointly decided, but may include group discussions, brainstorming exercises, photo exercises, etc. The workshop will also involve researchers studying the workshop methodology. They will follow the workshop and make observations about social interaction in the group and the different ways participants engage in the workshop.

You will also be invited to give feedback on a draft of the interview guide. The feedback can be given by email (about 15min). The place and time of the workshop will be decided together. You will also be invited to fill in a questionnaire evaluating the workshop. It takes about 5 minutes to fill in the survey. You will also be invited to participate in a short interview (about 15-20min) where researchers will ask about your experience of participating in the workshop and how it can be improved.

Project title: Resilience among refugee children and young adults - a qualitative study with co-creation with the target group and stakeholder organisations.

You can participate in the workshop but decline the questionnaire and/or the subsequent interview.

Possible consequences and risks of participating in the project

Talking about the challenges of migration can bring up emotions. If, during the workshop, you feel unwell and need to step away, that's fine. If you feel that you need further help and support from an adult, we can help you get in touch with the health services.

Barnafrids staff have a legal obligation to report any suspected offence. We are also obliged to report a concern if there is information that a minor is at risk of harm.

What happens to your information?

The project will collect and record information about you in the form of materials that we worked on together. All materials produced in the workshop will be treated so that they cannot be accessed by unauthorised persons. Researchers observing the workshop will complete an observation protocol that will not contain information that can be directly linked to you. The questionnaire evaluating the workshop will be answered anonymously. The interview will be recorded (voice and video) and then analysed. The information cannot be linked to individuals. The controller of your personal data is Linköping University. According to the EU General Data Protection Regulation, you have the right to access, free of charge, the information about you that is processed in the project, and, if necessary, to correct if something is inaccurate. You can also request that your data to be erased and the processing of your personal data to be restricted. However, the right to erase and to restrict processing of personal data does not apply when the data is necessary for the research in question. If you wish to access the information, please contact Professor Laura Korhonen, laura.korhonen@liu.se, telephone 013-28 11 81. The data protection officer can be reached at dataskyddsombud@liu.se. If you are dissatisfied with the way your personal data is processed, you have the right to lodge a complaint to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection, which is the supervisory authority.

How will you be informed about the outcome of the project?

You will receive information about the interview guide by email. The results of the study can later be read in future scientific articles.
