Torsten Hägerstrand was deeply involved when the ideas for thematic research organization, which laid the groundwork for the Department of Thematic Studies, Linköping University, were initiated in the 1970s at Linköping University. Hägerstrand advocated holistic, inter-disciplinary, multidimensional and problem-based research. He believed that being locked into disciplines was counterproductive to the generation of new knowledge.

This was one reason why the Department of Thematic Studies at Linköping University became the recipient of the writings, manuscripts, books and photographs that Hägerstrand left behind. These are now kept in the Torsten Hägerstrand Room at the Department of Thematic Studies, and they represent a lengthy and extensive body of research.
Welcome to visit the Hägerstrand room read the books and papers and to contemplate the breadth of the sources of inspiration on which Hägerstrand's world of ideas is based. A list of the contents of the shelves is available here.
