My PhD-project examines the association between fatigue and cognitive function and possible ways of measuring the objective aspect of fatigue using neuropsychological testing.

Fatigue and Cognitive Function

Fatigue occurs as a symptom in a wide range of medical conditions.

Fatigue is generally measured using self-report forms, which capture the subjective experience of fatigue. Self-reports are the standard assessment methods in both research and clinical practice. There is also an objective aspect of fatigue, performance fatigue, which refers to a decline in performance in a task over time as a result of fatigue. Today, there is no established way of measuring cognitive performance fatigue, but previous research studies have shown that repeated cognitive testing may be a useful method.

In addition to the lack of measurement methods, more knowledge is needed about how performance fatigue is connected to other factors, such as subjective fatigue, illness perception and mental health, and how performance fatigue affects daily life and ability to work.

My PhD-project examines multiple aspects of performance fatigue; possible measurement methods, associations with subjective fatigue and cognitive function, and whether performance fatigue has prognostic value for work ability after acquired brain injury. Our research is focused on acquired brain injury and post-covid. The project is carried out in collaboration with my supervisors: Josefine Andin, Ulrika Birberg Thornberg and Richard Levi.
