My research focuses on how to reduce travel by public transport during peak hours. A more evenly staggered travel demand can reduce congestion, crowding, and the cost of public transport.

Presentation

Eva-Lena is a PhD student in production economics at Linköping University and K2. In her research project, she is investigating the possibility of spreading out rush hour travel on public transport through policy instruments at various levels.

The aim of the project is to investigate the conditions for changing public transport passenger flows and thereby reducing operating costs, as fewer vehicles are needed during the traffic day.

The research focuses on possible ways to reduce peak travel times, partly by investigating how individuals' behaviour can be changed through nudging and whether awareness of peak times can be increased, and partly by studying how decisions at a strategic level can enable changes that lead to a more even traffic flow and increased capacity. Ongoing studies focus on school start times – how these could be spread out and what effects this could have.
