Research Support

From fundamental research to industrial application – enabling innovation

At Linköping University, new knowledge and technologies are developed in additive manufacturing of metals and polymers. Through ADDLAB, research, advanced equipment and industrial collaboration are brought together in a shared environment that strengthens the entire value chain – from material and process to product and application.

The research focuses on understanding how microstructure and process parameters govern material properties, developing new alloys and recyclable material flows, and applying simulation and design optimisation for efficient and sustainable manufacturing. The projects range from fundamental studies of melt dynamics in metals to applications in energy, medical technology, aerospace and automotive industries.

Through ADDLAB, researchers and industrial partners can access shared infrastructure, receive support in design and process development, and carry out experimental studies and printing in both metal and polymer systems. The centre acts as a testbed for innovation, where academia and industry jointly develop the manufacturing solutions of the future.

Collaboration and support

ADDLAB provides practical support and collaborative opportunities for researchers and companies looking to explore or apply additive manufacturing in their projects.

Here, you can receive support with:

  • Printing: access to metal and polymer printers for prototypes, test components and research specimens.
  • Design support: guidance in design for additive manufacturing (DfAM), topology optimisation and material selection.
  • Advisory and process support: assistance in choosing methods, process parameters and post-processing strategies.
  • Joint research and development projects: opportunities to participate in or initiate collaborative projects between academia and industry.
  • Skills development: courses, workshops and degree projects linked to ongoing research.

The aim is for ADDLAB to serve as an enabler – an open and interdisciplinary platform where ideas are transformed into sustainable solutions for the manufacturing industry of the future.
